BVDA's project in Ghana is split between the Livelihood Project and the Eccachild Project
Livelihood:
- Visit existing participants on the scheme for loan repayments and assess progress of business projects.
- Organise and deliver workshops
Eccachild:
- Visit families identified for the Eccachild scheme.
- Complete paperwork for NHIS registration.
- Organise health checks.
- Organise uniform and equipment for children.
- Visit hospitals/clinics to get medicine (if required) for children with particular health needs.
- Visit schools to discuss children’s needs.
- Organise and deliver workshops
AFAWI:
- AFAWI are an NGO based in Accra, Ghana, who have been supporting women and children in Ghana for the last 10 years
- 2019 will be the first year that BVDA work alongside AFAWI, but we hope that during the project we are able to build a relationship with the charity and support them in the future
Country Information:
- Ghana was formerly called The Gold Coast and was the first British Colony in Africa to gain independence in Sub-Saharan Africa in March 1957. After becoming independent, Ghana faced immense challenges. The first president, Kwame Nkrumah, was ousted nine years after independence, and for the next 25 years, Ghana was typically governed by military rulers. The country returned to stable democratic rule in 1992 and has built a stable, liberal economy.
- Ghana is in West Africa, bordering the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Togo.
- The capital city is Accra which is where the NGO that we work with
- The population is approximately 28 million
- Ghana has a young population, with approximately 57% of the population under the age of 25 and the life expectancy is 66
- One of the biggest problems facing Ghana is HIV/AIDS, with a prevalence rate of 2.4% in urban areas
